Target: California Attorney General Kamala Harris
Goal: Press charges against two officers who allegedly tackled and beat a man after he submit to the officers.
Alameda County Public Defender Brendon Woods is attempting to convince California Attorney General Kamala Harris to urge charges be pressed against two officers who allegedly tackled and beat a man in a back alley. Woods stated, “the surveillance video footage is disgusting and reminds me of Rodney King.”
The incident he was describing involved Stanislav Petrov and two officers in a back alley at around 1:30 a.m. Petrov was spotted in a car that was marked stolen, leading the officers on a police chase. After the two officers caught up to Petrov, they allegedly pinned him to the ground and then proceeded to beat the young man. The two officers took turns allegedly striking the man with their batons. Petrov was hospitalized for his injuries and has yet to be released from medical care.
While this man is suffering in the hospital because of these officers alleged excessive use of force, the officers themselves are on paid leave from work. They had Petrov held down and submissive but, instead of handcuffing him, they chose to unnecessarily beat him. Sign this petition and ask California Attorney General Kamala Harris to suggest an investigation into charging these officers with the alleged crime they have committed. Do not let these officers walk free of their alleged crime.
Dear Attorney General Harris,
I am writing you to today because I am appalled at the actions of two Alameda County Officers towards 28-year-old Stanislav Petrov. After pursuing Petrov on a police chase the officers chased him into a back alley, allegedly tackled him to the ground, and then took turns beating him with their police batons. They chose to use violence when the situation did not call for it. At the time they pulled out their batons, Petrov was already on the ground and had given up on escaping.
Police brutality is a highly publicized issue and a good majority of the time police get to walk away from their crimes without punishment. Wearing a badge does not permit beating another human being, period. I urge you to suggest an investigation into pressing charges against these two officers for their alleged crime. They put a man in the hospital and are currently sitting in their homes on paid leave. It is unfair that they do not have to pay for their alleged actions, yet Petrov has to physically suffer because of his.
