Target: John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States
Goal: Strike down Texas’ brutal anti-abortion law that will shut down nearly all abortion clinics in the state.
Women’s rights continue to take a hit in the Lone Star state as Texas lawmakers attempt to shut down legitimate abortion clinics. A state law passed in 2013 that had closed nearly 20 Texas abortion clinics and will likely shut down all but a mere 10 in the whole state. The Center for Reproductive Rights has filed suit with the Supreme Court against the state’s lawmakers in effort to protect the constitutional rights of women. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case, which is a positive step in the right direction.
The Supreme Court’s decision will be one of the most significant in women’s rights in decades. We must demand the court rule to overturn this law that effectively terminates women’s rights not only in Texas but in other states that may follow suit.
Dear Chief Justice Roberts,
Despite the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, politicians continue in their efforts to strip women of their constitutional rights. Texas, in particular, has taken a strong stance against women for decades. Your Court is now faced with a Roe v. Wade type decision, and that is overturning Texas’ oppressive anti-abortion law.
Women have the right to decide to terminate their pregnancy, particularly if they conceived under violent circumstances or they or the fetus are in medical crisis. I will remind you that our constitution established a government that separates church from state. Therefore, religious affiliation has no bearing in a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy.
Strike down Texas’ anti-abortion law and secure women’s rights by setting a legal precedence by which all lawmakers will be bound.
