Tell Macy’s to Give Its Workers Thanksgiving Off

By Sondra Stewart

Target: Terry J. Lundgren, Chairman and CEO of Macy’s

Goal: Don’t open Macy’s stores on Thanksgiving Day.

Macy’s announced in October that it will open its doors at 6 pm on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, for Black Friday sales, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Stores would then be open until 11 pm on the Friday itself. This policy means that many Macy’s employees would have to work on Thanksgiving, depriving them of time to enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Macy’s should not force its employees to work on Thanksgiving only to gain a few hours’ worth of business.

The practice of retailers opening on Thanksgiving Day itself only began in 2011, when stores including Macy’s opened at midnight between Thursday and Friday. That alone requires workers to come in on the evening of Thanksgiving. Retailers may have started the practice of earlier opening times in response to the post-Great Recession economy, but conditions have changed since 2011.

Macy’s holding sales on Thanksgiving evening makes even less sense when surveys show that consumers dislike the concept of a Thanksgiving Day opening. Some retailers, including Staples and H&M, have stopped Thanksgiving Day sales. All retail workers deserve what those companies have acknowledged that their workers have a right to: Thanksgiving Day as a holiday off from work. Macy’s should not make itself the exception. It should rescind its announcement and state that it will not open its stores at 6 pm on Thanksgiving.

By signing the petition below you will help urge the CEO of Macy’s to halt the store’s plans to open on the evening of Thanksgiving Day.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lundgren,

The announcement that Macy’s stores will open at 6pm on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2015 must be reversed.   Macy’s employees should not be made to work on a national holiday.

Macy’s began opening its stores on Thanksgiving Day in 2011, during a different economic climate. Other retailers, such as Staples and H&M, have stopped Thanksgiving Day sales. All retail workers should have the right to enjoy the entire holiday.

I am urging you to rescind the announcement made in October that Macy’s will open its stores on Thanksgiving Day. Please ensure your workers are able to have their holiday.

Sincerely,
