Target: John Tyson, CEO of Tyson Foods
Goal: End inhumane and disturbing “live hang area” method of killing chickens and replace it with a more humane method.
Tyson Foods has faced public backlash recently for alleged cases of animal abuse and cruelty towards their chickens in the slaughterhouses run by the major corporation. While it is imperative to investigate the reported disturbing acts of the employees in the slaughter houses mistreating the animals, we also need to look at the methods of killing reportedly used by the company itself. Tyson Foods currently operates it slaughterhouses with the “live hang area” method of killing their chickens. This process hangs the chickens upside down by metal shackles and transports them to an area where they receive an electric shock to knock them unconscious. Following the shock, the birds’ throats are slit and they proceed to bleed to death. This method keeps the chickens alive up until their necks are slit and they slowly die.
Other methods, such as the “controlled atmosphere killing” method, kill the chickens with gas before slitting their necks. This prevents the slower death and reduces the chance of mistakes being made. Failures in Tyson’s current slaughtering method have caused extremely disturbing deaths to the chickens. An example of this is on a disturbing video where an employee is allegedly shown ripping the chicken’s head off when the machine malfunctioned and the chicken missed it’s blade.
Sign this petition and urge Tyson Foods to switch to a more humane method for their slaughterhouses. They cannot continue to get away with such disturbing methods without consequence.
Dear Mr. Tyson,
I am writing you today because I am deeply disturbed with the killing methods demonstrated in Tyson Food’s slaughterhouses. Your company currently operates on the “live hang area” method of killing, which involves a small shock being injected into the chickens before their necks are slit and they bleed to death. This method has not only resulted in mistakes on the assembly line, but it has caused major backlash from the animal rights community.
The method you are currently employing heightens the risk of mistakes being made, as demonstrated in a disturbing video released of animal cruelty in your slaughterhouses. The employee in the video allegedly rips a chicken’s head off with his own hands after the “live hang” method fails and the chicken missed its blade. These disturbing occurrences can be eliminated if your company was to switch to a more humane method of killing your chickens.
“Controlled atmosphere killing” is a more humane method you should employ in your slaughterhouses. This method peacefully kills the chickens before the necks are slit, rather than only having a small shock meant to knock them unconscious. This way, the chickens are put to rest before even coming in contact with the slaughterhouse workers, minimizing the risk of mistakes being made. I urge you to switch your methods and take steps towards being a more humane company.
