Success: Officer Who Threw Student From Desk Fired

Target: Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott

Goal: Praise the firing of Deputy Ben Fields after he violently threw a student to the ground.

Outrage ensued after thousands witnessed the violent arrest of a high school student by Senior Deputy Ben Fields. Public outcry, including a ForceChange petition directed at the county sheriff, may have encouraged the move to fire Fields. The Department of Justice is also conducting a civil rights investigation that could lead to criminal charges against Fields. In a shocking video that circulated on social media earlier this week, Fields is depicted approaching a black female student sitting quietly at her desk, turning over the desk and throwing her violently to the ground. The supposed reason for this violence was that the student was asked to leave and did not comply.

This kind of behavior is utterly unacceptable from any officer of the peace, let alone one patrolling a high school. The incident was not Fields’ first offense during his years at Spring Valley High School. In 2007, a couple sued Fields for the use of unnecessary force in an arrest. He is also involved in another lawsuit over the alleged unlawful expulsion of a student. Several other incidents have been noted in which Fields allegedly grabbed students and threw them to the ground for verbal noncompliance.

Individuals with violent tendencies and explosive anger such as this are not fit for law enforcement and it sends a powerful message to eject Fields from his position. Sign the petition letter bellow to praise Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott for his decision and to encourage him to help in an investigation into Fields’ actions.

Dear Sheriff Lott,

I would like to commend you for your decision to fire Senior Deputy Ben Fields over his most recent violent incident. It is completely inappropriate to allow an officer of the law to act in this way, especially with high school students. Fields’ history has shown that he cannot manage his anger and deal with students in a safe or constructive manner. People who choose to use violence and intimidation before other options have no place in modern law enforcement.

Because of the circulation and outrage caused by the video, your actions in this case speak loudly. Your decision will send an important message across the country that this behavior must not be tolerated. Firing Fields and those like him is a step towards addressing the problem of police brutality in America. I encourage you to uphold these standards in the future and to aid the criminal investigation into Fields’ actions. Thank you for listening to the concerns of the community and making Spring Valley High School a safer place for students.
