Legalize Gay Marriage

Target: Ireland President Michael Higgins

Goal: Urge President Higgins to sign the bill that will allow gay couples to marry in Ireland.

Earlier this year, the citizens of Ireland voted overwhelmingly in support of the legalization of same-sex marriage in their country. It also has a large amount of support from the Irish political sphere as well, with many of them congratulating those effected by the vote over social media. If the marriage bill is signed into law, same-sex couples in Ireland could be permitted to marry by next week. It would be a historic and triumphant milestone for a prominently Catholic country to be a pioneer for gay rights around the world.

Ireland introduced “civil partnerships” in 2010, but many advocates complained that it didn’t do enough to provide recognition and protection to same-sex couples in the same way marriage does. An umbrella group called Yes Equality spurred the majority of this effort for change attempted to make clear that they were asking for something “different and distinct from religious marriage,” and that they didn’t intend to force churches against their beliefs.

Sign the petition below to urge the President Michael Higgins to sign this historic bill into law and finally allow same-sex couples to legally marry in Ireland.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Higgins,

Ireland has been fighting strongly alongside the rest of the world for gay rights for decades. Only recently, Ireland’s government has responded in a relatively positive way by legalizing civil partnerships for same-sex couples of the country. Unfortunately, this institution didn’t provide the same proper recognition and legal protection that marriage did, and activists insisted that wasn’t enough. In the past five years, gay rights groups have fought for same-sex legal marriage and have clearly stated that they do not intend to force the legalization of religiously-accepted gay marriages or for Catholic institutions to involuntarily perform same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Earlier this year, Ireland voted in overwhelming favor for the bill to legalize same-sex marriage. Politicians have also shown strong favor for the bill and even congratulated effected groups on the overwhelming vote of support. The only thing left to keep same-sex marriages from being legal in Ireland and for committed same-sex couples across the country from legally bonding themselves with the ones they love is your signature of support to pass the bill into law.

For the sake of the progression of equal human rights across the globe, I insist that you allow this bill to pass and allow same-sex couples to the same rights of marriage as every other Irish citizen.

Sincerely,
