Ban Bear Hunting After Hundreds of Bears Killed in One Day

Target: Diane Eggeman, Division Director, Florida Hunting and Game Management

Goal: Reinstate ban on bear hunting in Florida.

Bear hunting has been banned in Florida since 1994, however the ban was recently lifted and 207 bears were killed in a single day. The reason for the lift is supposedly to control the bear population. However, the last time a statewide count was taken was 13 years ago. It is estimated that about 3,100 bears live in the state and 3,778 hunting permits were sold. There is no logic in selling more permits than bears.

The ban lift does not only affect the bears being shot, but also their families. According to the BBC, the first bear killed was a mother who was still lactating. Instead of killing these animals, land reservations should be made so bears have more land to roam and less of a chance of coming into contact with humans. Instead, more land is being lost to industrialization. Not much is being done to help the bears and now they are being killed for it.

After 20 years of peace, it seems unusual that the ban has been lifted. Sign this petition below and demand that Florida puts the ban on bear hunting back into action.

Dear Ms. Diane Eggeman,

After 20 years of peace between humans and bears, the state of Florida has decided to lift the ban on bear hunting. There seems to be no logical explanation for the recent lift. Controlling the bear population is supposedly one reason. A better way to help bears would be to give them more land rather than killing them. If more land reservations were created then human and bear interactions would decrease. It is also more environmentally friendly than killing bears, which can throw off the environment’s natural ecosystem.

In addition, a statewide tally has not been taken in 13 years. It is estimated that about 3,100 bears live in the state. However 3,778 hunting permits were sold. There is no logic in selling more permits than there are bears. The hunting does not only affect the bears killed but also their families. According to the BBC, the first bear killed was a mother bear who was still lactating. Killing mother bears puts cubs in grave danger.

Humans and bears were living in harmony in Florida for 20 years. Killing them is cruel and senseless. Please consider putting the ban back on bear hunting and save the lives of hundreds of living beings and their families.

  1. Someone can explain me why mankind seems to think it has the right of life or death on other species ?

  2. Dorothy Fronk says:

This senseless killing has to stop. Soon there will be no more bears left.

  3. Linda Singley says:

I cannot fathom the despicable acts of these people!! especially the director Diane Eggeman division director of hunting and game management. Should be called mismanagement. What kind of crazy person is she? Omg! This is totally unforgivable. I hope you wake up one day soon and look in the mirror and all you see are the dead carcasses of all those bears slaughtered. You’re a disgusting human being. Im ashamed for you that you are part of the human race. You’re a piece of —-.

  4. Alexandra Burgess says:

I cannot understand the mentality of these human beings( the worst animal on the planet!) they have no comprehension of how nature works they are just uneducated THUGS!!

  5. The cruelty and lies (re conservation) is downright shameful — LET THEM LIVE IN THEIR NATURAL HABITATS — if population management is genuinely an issue, there are non-lethal, moral and proper methods in taking care of this — bear hunting is cruel, shameful, merciless, unnecessary, unconscionable.

  6. That is ridiculous 207 bears killed on one day… too many permits me thinks!
