Target: Attorney General Loretta Lynch
Goal: Bring ExxonMobil to justice for lying to public about climate change science.
Through a recent investigation by Inside Climate news, it has been discovered that ExxonMobil conducted research that goes as far back as 1977 which affirms that climate change is in fact caused by the carbon emissions that come from fossil fuels. After ExxonMobil confirmed this, the corporation poured millions of dollars into efforts leading politicians and organizations to deny the validity of climate change and climate change scientists. Moreover, ExxonMobil spent millions more on lobbying in order to prevent caps and regulations on carbon emissions.
Bernie Sanders has recently written a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, where he charges ExxonMobil with “engaging in a cover-up to intentionally mislead the public about the reality of human-caused climate change, and by extension the risks of its carbon-intensive product,” according to ThinkProgress.
The situation with ExxonMobil has been compared to the Department of Justice’s successful lawsuit against the tobacco industry in which many big tobacco companies conspired to hide the impacts of smoking from the public. In fact, the attorney who prosecuted the tobacco companies said than an investigation led by the Department of Justice would be “plausible and should be considered.”
Dear Attorney General Loretta Lynch,
I am writing this petition letter to you to ask that the Department of Justice launches a full investigation into ExxonMobil. The corporation has known for almost forty years that climate change is in fact caused by carbon emissions from fossil fuels and has paid politicians to deny the science behind climate change. The actions of ExxonMobil are selfish and show a blatant disregard for the sanctity of the earth and the people who inhabit it.
The denial of the effects of climate change as a result of ExxonMobil trying to cover up the facts behind it has played a huge role in the United States’ failure to enact effective climate change policies and regulations capping carbon emissions. Billions of people will be affected by climate change, and ExxonMobil has helped to perpetuate the failure to act. It is important that this corporation is brought to justice in hopes that it is not too late to help all of those who continue to be affected by climate change every day and for the generations who will have to deal with the horrific negligence and corporate greed of ExxonMobil.
