Goal: Promote virtual dissection in lieu of inhumane animal dissection.
Every year, millions of animals are dissected in science classes. Simply the word dissection conjures up visions of brutality and inhumanity. Frogs are the most commonly dissected animal but dissections also occur on cats, dogs, rats, mice, rabbits, fetal pigs, and fish. There are more humane, efficient, and cost effective ways to teach anatomy. Speak up now to stop animal dissections in schools.
Mostly, the animals come from breeding facilities while some animals are caught in the wild. Animal carcasses also can come from some facilities where the animal was once used in experiments. Sadly, some animals are also lost or stolen companion animals and pets. It is not uncommon for supply companies to even source their animals from pounds and animal shelters.
Research has shown that classroom dissection desensitizes students to death. A significant number of students are not comfortable with the use of animals for dissection due to moral issues or a physical inability to cut open an animal.
Furthermore, dissection is not the only avenue to understand anatomy. There are computer simulations, observations of living humans, and examinations of human cadavers. Ninety percent of medical schools have abandoned animal dissection and turned to computer simulation.
Most studies have concluded that virtual dissection programs are equivalent or superior to traditional animal dissection methods in providing students with knowledge of biological processes and anatomy. Virtual dissection is also more cost efficient. Animal dissections require a constant supply of animals as well as involve the proper disposal of the animals’ dead bodies.
By utilizing virtual dissection in classrooms, the demand for animals in dissections will decrease drastically, reducing the need to slaughter these bred, captured, and stolen animals. Please sign the petition below and urge Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, to ban the use of animal dissections in the classroom and promote virtual dissection instead.
Dear Secretary Duncan,
The Department of Education needs to ban the use of animal dissection in classrooms and promote virtual dissection as a viable alternative. Animal dissection is cruel and inhumane and leads to animals being bred, captured, or stolen for use in animal dissections in schools.
Most studies agree that virtual dissection is preferred by students and provides a similar, or superior, learning experience. Virtual dissection is also more cost efficient over the long term and does not traumatically affect students who are unable to participate in classroom dissections due to moral beliefs or physical limitations.
I urge you to ban animal dissections in classrooms as an educational method. Promote virtual dissections and improve the lives of animals.
