Target: British Prime Minister David Cameron
Goal: Reverse discriminatory policies that allow shutting down peaceful mosques in the name of “combating extremism.”
Mosques can now be shut down and media outlets sanctioned in Britain due to new policies just announced by Prime Minister David Cameron. According to Cameron, this is in response to an increase in “radicalism” within the country. Reports indicated that at least 700 British citizens have joined “jihadist” groups that are currently fighting in Syria in the past four years.
It doesn’t matter how extreme a self-proclaimed sect of any religion becomes–punishing innocent individuals by promoting and actively implementing discrimination against them is wrong. The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, and every religion has violent extremists. Giving the government the power to shut down mosques just because they suspect it contains “radicals” is a blatant case of religious discrimination. Sanctioning and punishing media outlets for airing messages the government considers to be extreme is the definition of censorship and a violation of free speech.
These new policies are a clear example of government-sponsored Islamophobia. It will only serve to further alienate the Muslim community and expose them to more hateful prejudice and violence from the public that will see their bigoted attitudes backed by their leaders. Sign our petition to denounce these new laws and demand that they be immediately reversed before more innocent Muslim individuals are hurt.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
Your recently announced policies that will allow your government to shut down mosques and sanction media outlets you consider to be too extreme are very concerning. You’re going down a dangerous and unacceptable path to blatant religious discrimination and restricted freedom of speech, and you’re using fearmongering to do so.
You and I both know that the vast majority of Muslims are non-violent individuals who have never hurt anyone and do not condone any kind of extremism. Just like with any religion, Islam has a few radical and violent groups that do not represent the entire religion. There are radical and violent Christians, yet you’re not trying to shut down any Christian churches or censor their radio shows. This is clear religious discrimination.
You can’t let the current situation in Syria lead you to restrict the basic rights of your citizens. By doing so against one particular group that already faces a disproportionate amount of hate and prejudice in your country, you’re encouraging citizen violence against them. Unless you want to be responsible for a blatantly oppressive regime, you must immediately work to reverse these new policies and stand against Islamophobic bigotry. Be an example of freedom and tolerance, not fear and hatred.
