Save Feral Cats from Euthanasia

Many Feral Cats by Chriss Haight Pagani

Target: Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York

Goal: Safely control and protect feral cats by adopting a trap-neuter-return program.

Community cats suffer from euthanasia and abuse in an attempt to reduce the feral and stray cat population. Killing these outdoor cats is not the most effective way to deal with the overpopulation problem. We must act now to instate a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program that spays or neuters and vaccines these community cats and kittens and then releases them back into their colonies.

Euthanizing cats will only kill a percentage of the population, not reduce the fertility of cats. A TNR program will safely stabilize cat communities by stopping the birth of unwanted kittens. Males will be less inclined to fight each other for a female in heat, reducing infections and noise associated with the fights.

In New York, a TNR bill has passed the Senate and is now at the Governor’s desk waiting for approval. We must speak up to let the Governor of New York know that we are serious about saving the lives of feral cats, stabilizing cat colonies, and improving the quality of New York communities.

Not only will TNR programs spay and neuter these animals but also vaccinate them, lessening diseases and infections such as rabies and cancer. The quality of life for these cats and the residents that live near the cat communities will improve if these programs are implemented.

By signing this petition, you urging the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, to pass the bill to allocate funds for TNR programs in New York communities in Upstate New York and Long Island. We need to stop the killing of these innocent kitties and humanely maintain community cat populations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Cuomo,

Overpopulation of feral cats can be a serious issue and euthanizing these community cats is not the solution. Euthanasia of feral and stray cats does nothing to prevent overpopulation. To stop unwanted kittens and the spread of diseases, you must approve funding for a TNR program in New York communities.

A TNR program will spay or neuter the cats as well as vaccine them. Spaying and neutering reduces the amount of female cats in heat and also reduces male cat fights. The vaccinations will also lessen the amount of diseases in the community, especially rabies. Ultimately, TNR programs will improve the quality of New York neighborhoods by reducing cat numbers and the amount of aggressive and sick cats.

Please take action and approve TNR programs for the benefit of New York feral and stray cats and New York communities. I hope your decision to establish a TNR program encourages and inspires other states to do the same.

Sincerely,
