Investigate U.S. Drone Strikes Overseas

Target: John Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representatives

Goal: Conduct an independent congressional investigation into the U.S. drone strikes overseas.

Congress must conduct an independent investigation into the actions of President Barack Obama. An anonymous whistleblower has leaked a report entitled “The Drone Papers” which details the extent of the Obama administration’s drone strikes overseas. This shocking document alleges that Obama has what Amnesty International calls a “global killing program” designed to identify people as “combatants” for the sole purpose of assassinating them. Amnesty International Director of Security with Human Rights, Naureen Shah, expressed that the papers raise serious concerns as to whether the United States has violated international law, and we, as citizens, cannot stand for this.

Alongside allegedly targeting international persons for assassination, “The Drone Papers” also outlay the selection process for the human targets, and according to the whistleblower, this decision-making process is seriously flawed, taking a huge and unnecessary toll against human life in several countries. Obama is accused of keeping this global killing program private, as well as the real identities of those U.S. drones have killed. This has led Amnesty International to suggest that the president is moving forward with “the Bush-era project” of turning the world into a war zone yet avoiding accountability.

We do not have the right to commit political assassination on whomever we please. This not only violates international law, but also places the United States in the precarious position of committing crimes against humanity. We must urge Congress to investigate the allegations contained within “The Drone Papers.” We must get to the bottom of the Obama administration’s alleged global killing program.

Dear Speaker Boehner,

“The Drone Papers” take a startling look into the Obama Administration’s apparent “global killing program,” and if there is an ounce of truth in them, Congress must intervene and stop this horrific act against humanity. As a proud American, I can honestly say that I am ashamed to think that we are kill-listing humans and then assassinating them. This is not what this country was founded to do.

It is possible that “The Drone Papers” are not true. It is possible that the whistleblower who released them has an agenda against President Obama, his administration and America as a whole. Regardless, the mere suggestion that the United States is violating international law warrants an immediate and thorough investigation. We cannot ignore these accusations. This would be a grave disservice to the people of the United States.

I am urging you to encourage Congress to open an independent and thorough investigation into the details outlayed in “The Drone Papers.” As the governing authority enacted to hold the president accountable for his actions, you must take a hard look into these allegations. Should you find that the president is running what Amnesty International calls a “global killing program,” you must put a stop to it immediately. We cannot be in violation of international law; we cannot be conducting crimes against humanity.
