Stop Border Patrol from Violating Civil Rights and Acting with Impunity

Target: Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson

Goal: Punish the border patrol officers who allegedly acted with impunity and violated civil rights with abuses like racial profiling and unwarranted stops and searches.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has accused the U.S. Border Patrol of allegedly allowing border patrol agents to act with impunity and face no consequences for abuses like racial profiling and unwarranted stops and searches. Many drivers who have been stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol near the U.S.-Mexico border have filed complaints that were either never investigated or that resulted in no consequences for the violations.

One woman filed a complaint that she was pulled over by two border patrol agents late at night “in the middle of nowhere” after crossing into California with her 4-year-old daughter. After being pulled over, she said she received an aggressive search and interrogation where one agent said, “Only criminals and people trying to hide things get nervous.”

Another man said he and his family were interrogated about their legal status and arrest history by border patrol agents before the agents then left without any explanation as to why the family was stopped.

Activists say these border patrol agents violate people’s rights with a blatant disregard for conduct or consequences because the agents know they won’t face any consequences. Tell officials to take these accusations seriously and punish any agents who are guilty of mishandling people and acting with impunity.

Dear Secretary Johnson,

The U.S. Border Patrol seems to always be in trouble for abusing people and acting with unnecessary aggression in the line of duty. Even more complaints of abuse like acting with impunity, racial profiling and unwarranted stops and searches have been filed recently, and some are saying that these complaints have either not been investigated or those involved have faced no consequences.

This kind of injustice cannot continue and these agents cannot go on thinking that there won’t be any consequences for their abusive actions. I urge you to take these accusations seriously and punish any agents who are guilty of mishandling people and acting with impunity.
