Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Applaud California for requiring anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers to let their clients know they are not licensed medical facilities, and requiring the centers provide information about options like abortion and contraception.
Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Prevent Fake Health Clinics from Lying to Women, California passed a law that will aid in regulating and restricting anti-abortion pregnancy crisis centers accused of essentially lying to women and posing as medical clinics in order to convince them not to get an abortion.
The bill, which has now been signed into law, is called the Reproductive FACT Act (Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care, and Transparency) and will require that the almost 170 anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers across California let clients who come in know that the centers are not licensed medical facilities.
These centers often dress themselves up as medical facilities with members in white doctor’s coats allegedly giving false medical information and shaming women into changing their mind about getting an abortion. The law will also require that the centers provide information about contraceptives and abortion.
Applaud this step towards holding these lying centers accountable and stopping the spread of misinformation and straight up lies.
Dear Governor Jerry Brown,
I am writing to tell you how glad I am that the Reproductive FACT Act was signed into law and will now place stricter regulations on anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers that lie to women, spread medical misinformation and attempt to shame women into changing their mind about getting an abortion.
These centers use insane tactics to masquerade themselves as medical facilities and spread complete lies about family planning and reproductive options. Clients’ experiences at these centers are often traumatizing thanks to the lies of the people running them.
I applaud you for signing this bill into law and protecting women from the lies at these centers.
