Target: Barack Obama, President of the United States
Goal: Preserve beautiful and sacred lands surrounding the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon and neighboring areas are under threat. Climate change, water depletion, and existing uranium mining claims are already causing damage to the area. Under the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument Act, scheduled to be introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives in coming weeks, the 1.7 million acres surrounding the north and south rims of the Canyon would be permanently protected from any future mining claims. Urge the President to create the national monument now instead of waiting for Congress’ decision.
The bill preserves Native American sacred sites as well as access to spiritual and medicinal gathering activities. It also protects grazing rights, private property, any existing mining claims, and ensures governmental and tribal control for wildfire fighting efforts.
When U.S Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and eleven tribal leaders announced the bill to create the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument, they were capitalizing on former Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar’s work. He successfully banned new mining claims in the area for twenty years. This bill would make those bans permanent. Uranium mines in the area are already poisoning the ground water. Permanently banning all future mining claims will put a halt to any future contamination and protect sacred tribal springs.
It is within presidential power to create national monuments. There is no need to wait for Congress to act. Ask President Obama to create the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument now and permanently protect this beautiful and sacred area.
Dear President Obama,
U.S Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) is set to introduce the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument Act in coming weeks. His efforts to protect the Grand Canyon rim areas are commendable. Unfortunately, by introducing the needed protections as a bill, time will be lost and the uranium miners and polluters in the area will have a chance to prevent its passage.
As president, you have the power to protect this area. With the stroke of a pen, you can preserve the beauty of this area for generations to come and protect tribal sacred lands and waters.
There is currently a twenty year ban on new mining claims in this area. We ask that you make this ban permanent by using your presidential powers to create the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument now and avoid Congressional holdup.
