Target: Senator Simon Birmingham, Australia’s Minister for Education and Training
Goal: Prevent national rape and sexual assault by increasing public sexual assault education and training.
Police have found a video of a group of men and a teenager raping and sexually assaulting an underage girl at a house party. Police say that up to eight men were in the room during the attack and many of them participated in her assault. This is such a disgusting and heinous crime. We must speak up and demand an increase of public awareness and education in relation to rape.
In Sydney, these men were arrested in an unrelated anti-graffiti operation where authorities confiscated a GoPro camera and found the evidence of sexual assault while scanning the footage. The girl had not reported the rape at the time of the incident. The footage revealed she was most likely unconscious or semi-conscious during the assault. However, this could easily be related to drugs or intoxication by the men. The sixteen-year-old is now undergoing counseling over the incident and is in an unstable emotional state.
The only way to prevent this type of horrendous crime from happening again is by educating the public on the prevention of rape and sexual assault as well as responding to sexual assault victims. Tell the Ministry of Education to increase public awareness of sexual assault prevention through teen and adult education.
Dear Senator Birmingham,
A tragic crime occurred at a house party in Sydney when a sixteen-year-old girl was raped and sexually assaulted by a group of men and a teen. They filmed the entire attack. The footage was discovered when the group was arrested for an unrelated anti-graffiti operation. The scene was found on a GoPro camera in possession of one of the men. The girl was most likely semi-conscious or unconscious during the attack and is currently undergoing counseling for her trauma and health.
The men are being charged with multiple crimes and will be prosecuted in the near future. However, incarcerating the perpetrators is not enough to permanently prevent these crimes from happening again. Preventing rape and the social acceptance of rape requires proper education on its definition and consequences. As many as eight people witnessed the gang rape of this underage girl, as shown by its footage, and no one attempted to stop it. Australia needs stronger and more thorough public education on the prevention of rape and sexual assault in order to prevent this devastation from happening to anyone again in the future.
