Punish Nestlé for Allegedly Illegally Bottling Water During California Drought

Target: California Attorney General Kamala Harris

Goal: Charge Nestlé under the full extent of the law if the company is found to have been bottling water illegally during the California drought.

Nestlé, the largest bottled water company in the U.S., is accused of pumping millions of gallons of water from California’s San Bernardino National Forest without a permit, causing major harm to the environment during California’s historic drought. The alleged illegal water is bottled and sold under Nestlé’s Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water brand. The company has a water pipeline located at Strawberry Creek in the national forest.

Although Nestlé does hold water rights to the area, its permit to transport water across the national forest expired in 1988 and has not been renewed. Because of this, the U.S. Forest Service has not checked on the environmental impact of Nestlé pumping out and bottling tens of millions of gallons of water each year since 1988.

The company claims it’s not contributing to the drought because the amount of water it uses is minimal compared to, say, water used to keep California golf courses green.

Urge officials to charge Nestlé under the full extent of the law if Nestlé is found to have been illegally bottling water and damaging the environment during the California drought.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Harris,

The current drought in California is one of the worst we have ever seen. Water use limitations have been placed on everyone, yet businesses seem to keep violating those limitations with blatant disregard for the environment. Nestlé may be one of those companies. The company is accused of pumping millions of gallons of water from California’s San Bernardino National Forest without a permit, causing major harm to the environment and those who inhabit it.

I urge you to charge Nestlé under the full extent of the law if the company is found to have been illegally bottling water and damaging the environment during the California drought.

Sincerely,
