Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Applaud the ban of concealed weapons on college and school campuses to combat gun violence.
Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Keep Guns Off College Campuses, governments have taken notice and now California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law banning concealed weapons on school and college campuses without permission. The law comes shortly after a gunman killed nine people in a class at a community college in Oregon and after fatal shootings on campuses in Arizona and Texas.
In the past, people with concealed-weapons permits could enter a college or university campus with weapons no questions asked. Now California’s law will require that those with concealed-weapons permits obtain permission from school officials before entering campus with firearms.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) claims the law infringes on Second Amendment rights that allow people to carry firearms for self-defense, but that claim makes no sense because people are still allowed to carry the guns but have to let officials know they’re being carried.
Applaud this step towards combating gun violence on college campuses amidst all the recent school shootings.
Dear Governor Brown,
After the recent campus shootings in Oregon, Arizona and Texas, something needed to be done to take action against gun violence and massacres on college campuses. I applaud you for taking that step by signing a law banning concealed weapons on school and college campuses without permission.
Gun rights activists shouldn’t be concerned about the law infringing on their rights because they are still allowed to bring their concealed weapons on campus so long as they obtain permission from school officials.
Thank you for taking action during this difficult time in American history and trying something to protect students on college and school campuses across California.
