Target: Lord Falconer, Shadow Secretary of State, U.K.
Goal: Return child to parents after it was found that an illness caused bruising and bleeding, not parental abuse.
Two parents are fighting to get their child back after being found not guilty of wrongful abuse charges. Karissa Cox and Richard Carter, a young couple in the U.K., were just like every other set of new parents when they welcomed their little one over three years ago. When the baby had blood in its mouth after a feeding, they were understandably worried.
The parents rushed the baby to the hospital and had no way of predicting what happened next. The doctors noticed bruises on the baby and accused the parents of abuse. Following the accusations, the baby was taken out of the parents’ care and placed with a different family.
Fast forward three years and the parents have been found not guilty of the abuse charges. The baby has since been diagnosed with Von Willebrand disease, which weakens the body so it bruises easily. A radiologist came to the conclusion that there was likely no fractures on the child in the first place. Despite all of these obvious signs pointing to the parents being non-abusive, they are likely to never see their child again. The parents have spoken publicly saying: “We took our child to the hospital seeking help and they stole our baby from us.”
The father of the child, a former soldier, says that they will fight to the last breath for their child. They took their baby to the hospital out of fear for their baby’s well-being only to have their worst fear realized. The situation has been blamed on the U.K. justice system wanting to rush through cases like these.
It is disgraceful that these parents have lost their baby, been wrongfully accused of abuse charges, and dealt with the courts repeatedly all within three years, and still do not have their child. Sign this petition and urge the courts to bring this baby home to it’s parents and end their three-year heartbreak.
Dear Lord Falconer,
I am writing you today because I am saddened by a court ruling involving two young parents who lost their baby to an unfair accusation. Three years ago, Karissa Cox and Richard Carter brought their then six-week-old baby to the hospital with concerns about the baby’s mouth bleeding. The doctors noticed bruises on the baby’s body and after reporting their observations, the baby was taken from the parents’ care. Fast forward three years and the baby has been diagnosed with a disease that causes it to bruise easily, and the parents have been found not guilty of abuse.
Despite these positive steps, the parents still do not have their baby. Every day, they have to face the heartbreak of knowing their child is in the arms of someone else. With the way things are going, it is likely they will never see their child again. It is shockingly unacceptable that these young, innocent parents are forced to deal with this hardship. I urge you to grant these heartbroken parents custody of their child once again. It is unjust that they should have to lose their child due to false claims made years ago.
