Use Executive Authority to Promote Gun Safety

Target: United States President Barack Obama

Goal: Enact new background-checks for gun purchases to prevent further tragedies.

With two mass shootings on college campuses recently, President Barack Obama needs to use his executive authority to implement background-check requirements for those who wish to purchase weapons from gun dealers. According to the Washington Post, Obama is considering using his executive authority to implement changes that would mean, “dealers who exceed a certain number of sales each year would be required to obtain a license from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and perform background checks on potential buyers.” Obama was pushing for universal background checks on gun sales in the week of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, however this legislation failed in the Senate. However, he later used his executive authority to subject “gun purchases by corporations and trusts to background checks and banning almost all re-imports of military surplus firearms to private entities,” (according to the Washington Post).

President Obama has already waited long enough to find long term solutions to end devastating yet ubiquitous gun tragedies. Currently, anyone who makes occasional sales or exchanges to add to a collection or because it is a hobby, and those who sell firearms from a personal collection, are exempt from gun background checks.  If Congress is not willing to work with the President on gun control legislation, it is his duty to use his authority so that the people of the United States can live in a more safe nation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Barack Obama,

I am writing this petition letter to you to express the urgency in which I feel you must act on gun control through the use of your executive authority. After Congress rejected legislation that would require background checks for private sellers, it is clear that effective gun control legislation will only be able to be enacted through the power that you hold as President.

You have said that we have become numb in our reactions and that these shootings have become routine. If you use your powers as the President, this can change. Mass shootings need to be brought under control in this country. It is necessary to bypass Congress to enact effective gun control.

Sincerely,

  1. Myrna Burdick says:

    Dear Mr. President,

Our country is a quagmire of guns-right folks who
think the chinese hordes or their neighbors are on the way over to kill them. How did we ever get to this state? Their paranoia is fueled by the likes of Rush and others. And the NRA is also getting
    everyone into a frenzy.

People should try talking to each other rather than sitting everywhere poking at their i-phone looking at pictures or texting – it is pretty pitiful!

Please use your executive power to require background checks.
