Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Applaud the signing of one of the strongest pay equity laws in the United States that works towards eliminating the gender wage gap.
Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Close the Gender Wage Gap: Support Equal Pay for Equal Work, California Governor Jerry Brown has signed the country’s strongest law regarding pay equity and eliminating the gender wage gap between working men and women. According to a recent U.S Census Bureau report, women in California who work full time are paid a median 84 cents for every dollar that men make.
The new law will help give employees more grounds to fight against any alleged discrimination. The new law also allows employees to discuss wages paid to co-workers without retaliation and allows them to more clearly claim retaliation.
Employers who are sued by workers who allege discrimination will have to prove that the difference in wages is due to other factors besides gender like seniority and that those factors are job-related and not due to discrimination.
The passing of this law is a huge step towards closing the gender gap and providing true equality for all. Applaud the passing of this historic law.
Dear Governor Brown,
According to a recent U.S Census Bureau report, women in California who work full time are paid a median 84 cents for every dollar that men make, but thanks to the new law you just signed, this may no longer be a reality.
I’m glad to hear that this new law will provide more grounds for employees to handle alleged discrimination and will also make employers take a serious look at gender pay gaps. The passing of this law is true history, being that it’s the toughest of its kind on this subject.
I applaud you for passing this historic law that will bring us closer to equality.
