Target: Head Chair of the Philadelphia Education Commission Marjorie Neff
Goal: Impose stricter regulation and background investigation on candidates for childcare and education positions.
A woman was recently sentenced for kidnapping a kindergartner and sexually assaulting her. Christina Regusters in Philadelphia was working at a daycare when she kidnapped the 5-year-old girl by posing as her mother to sign her out of Bryant Elementary School. She then took the child to a house in the neighborhood, carried her upstairs in a laundry bag, and sexually assaulted her with a sharp object while she held her captive for hours. The girl was later found in a nearby park half-clothed and badly injured.
Regusters underwent a thorough mental health evaluation during the trial and received 20 years to life for involuntary deviant sexual intercourse causing serious bodily injury, as well as 10 to 20 years for aggravated assault and kidnapping. Christina confessed to being a part of the kidnapping but denied sexually assaulting the child and even claimed to have been responsible for her escape.
Ensure that another brutal case like this doesn’t happen again by demanding that stricter regulation and background investigations are required for childcare and education workers.
Dear Chairwoman Neff,
Last year, a tragic event occurred when Christina Regusters, a woman working for a Philadelphia daycare at the time, kidnapped a 5-year-old girl from Bryant Elementary School before brutally physically and sexually assaulting her. The woman posed as the girl’s mother and signed her out from school before taking her to a nearby house, carrying her up the stairs in a laundry bag, and sexually assaulting her with a sharp object while she held her captive for hours. When the little girl was found later in a nearby park, she was half-clothed and badly injured.
Recently, Regusters was sentenced to 40 years to life for her crimes of involuntary sexual intercourse causing serious bodily injury as well as aggravated assault and kidnapping. However, there is still more that needs to be done to ensure that this horrendous crime never happens again to another child.
It’s clear that there should be no circumstance in which a child predator is able to take a child from a public school with the permission of its staff, let alone work in a child care facility. Please enforce stricter regulations and thorough background investigations on your childcare and education employees.
