Increase Security and Mental Health Facilities At UCC

Target: President of Umpqua Community College Joseph Olson

Goal: Increase the level of security after mass shooting and provide a mental health care for all members of the college community.

Recently a tragic shooting occurred at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, killing nine people and injuring over twenty. The 20-year-old suspect exchanged fire with the responding authorities before killing himself. The shooter appeared to have started in one building before moving to another, and victims were found in multiple different rooms. The suspect made posts on social media the night before stating his intent to shoot up the school and received varied feedback and criticism, some people even advising him on his weapon choice and strategy.

Umpqua Community College is not only a local educational insitution, but is a greatly used resource by all of Roseburg’s citizens. Many people visit the campus to reserve their facilities or use their educational tools such as the library or computer lab. Before this tragic event, the college prided itself as a peaceful, safe atmosphere for year-round recreational activities. Tell the president of this school that as a communal resource, Umpqua’s college campus needs to have freely available mental health facilities and needs to more strictly enforce its security after recent events.

Dear President Olson,

I would like to begin by saying that I am deeply sorry for the tragic events that have occurred on your campus recently. Words cannot express the feeling of loss that the entire Umpqua and Roseburg community are feeling over the sudden death of nine beloved community members as well as the injury of at least twenty more. It is such a shame that the young man suspected of these crimes was unable to receive mental health care and support before his drastic decision to cause this horrific destruction.

I believe that tragedies like this can be prevented in the future, and that they in fact must be prevented for the sake of Umpqua’s community’s peace and security in their own town. Everyone needs a place where they can receive care and support, and having a mental health care center open to the entire Umpqua community would be able to provide this. It also goes without saying that a stricter campus security regimen will be necessary in light of recent events. Please give your school an easily accessable mental health center and a larger security force.
