Target: Congressman Bob Bishop (R-UT)
Goal: Save America’s national parks and prevent reallocation of funds.
Millions of Americans each year enjoy the beauty and splendor of America’s National Park system. From the well- known ones like Yosemite and Yellowstone, to the lesser known one’s such as Saint-Gaudens in New Hampshire, our National Parks are home to flora, fauna, art, and history. Each Park is a treasure and needs to be preserved.
On September 30, 2015, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is set to renew. This Fund is a budget-neutral initiative. The money in this fund comes from a variety of private industry resources including offshore oil and gas development and is used to fund conservation projects at the local, state, and national levels, including the National Parks. Rep. Bishop would like to see the Fund expire and reallocate the money. He’s yet to make clear exactly how he’d prefer the money be spent.
The LWCF has a large base of bipartisan support and is also used to purchase pockets of land within the protected national park areas. These pockets, called inholdings, help prevent development. Currently, 43% of our national parks are at risk for development because of unprotected private land within the park boundaries. Money from the LWCF is used to purchase this private land and ensure our Parks remain unspoiled.
Sign this petition and tell Congressman Bishop to renew the LWCF.
Dear Congressman Bishop,
The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is set to renew on September 30, 2015. As this is a budget-neutral initiative with bipartisan support which actually helps fund numerous Parks in your home state, your active attempts to ensure its non-renewal are quite distressing.
Millions of Americans enjoy all that the Park system has to offer. As a society, we want these parks to be around for our children and our children’s children. The LWCF helps ensure that this will happen. By protecting the land within national park boundaries from development and funding conservation efforts, the LWCF creates an America that is rich–not just in salable resources, but in beauty. Beauty that also accounts for tourism dollars.
Next time you’re home in beautiful Utah, take a stroll through one of the many parks there. Absorb the beauty and remember why the LWCF must always be renewed.
