Target: The ForceChange Community
Goal: Applaud the end of Shell’s oil drilling efforts in Alaska’s Arctic waters.
Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Stop Shell from Drilling in the Arctic, the oil company will now cease its oil drilling efforts in the Arctic waters north of Alaska for the foreseeable future. For years, Shell fought for the ability to drill in these waters, which was protested by activists and environmentalists. Shell cited the reasons for the stop of the drilling as the lack of oil, the expense and the “challenging and unpredictable” federal regulatory environment.
One of the activist groups who launched a campaign against the drilling, Greenpeace USA, is calling the announcement a historic victory for all those who fought against the oil drilling. Now we don’t have to worry about the lack of existing technology for cleaning up a major oil spill in these waters, which would have been extremely damaging to the environment and the innocent animals who inhabit it.
Let us applaud this new development towards stopping oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic waters and protecting the environment and wildlife there.
Dear Members of the ForceChange Community,
Because of your efforts, Shell will no longer continue drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic waters. We fought against the drilling in the first place and faced a setback when President Obama allowed the drilling to occur, but we can now celebrate that it will occur no longer.
We can now rest a little easier knowing that we won’t have to worry about a major spill affecting the wildlife and environment in these waters that are already suffering from the effects of climate change. The U.S. must find alternative forms of fuel that don’t involve drilling into the earth and risking an environmental catastrophe.
Let us applaud that Shell will stop oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic waters.
