Target: Benjamin Netanyahu, head of Israel Defense Forces

Goal: Punish Israeli soldiers for attacking two journalists and destroying their equipment.

Two journalists were abruptly attacked by Israeli soldiers who damaged their personal property without provocation. Abbas Momani, a Palestinian photographer and Andrea Bernardi, an Italian journalist were working near a group of Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldiers when one of the soldiers punched Bernardi’s camera and broke the microphone. The soldier then proceeded to smash the camera into the ground.

The journalists immediately attempted to exit the situation and walk away but were followed by IDF soldiers in a loaded car. Another soldier hopped out of the vehicle, broke another camera and then stole one. The journalists escaped the incident and reported it the the IDF. Bernardi later returned the location of the attack to gather his broken camera when more trouble arose. Another armored vehicle pulled up and a soldier hopped out and put a gun to Bernardi’s head.

These transactions were horrendously unjust and uncalled for. Throughout the entirety of the attacks, the journalists were wearing vests and helmets that clearly read “PRESS.” They did not cross any boundaries or do anything illegal or disturbing, however were met with only violence and destruction. Sign this petition to ensure the officers who abused these journalists are punished for their actions and are made an example of so that the safety of future journalists is ensured.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Netanyahu,

During a recent incident in the West Bank, two journalist were attacked by Israeli Defense Force officers and their equipment was destroyed. They were followed in armored vehicles, had a gun put to their heads and lost all of their work and cameras due to these soldiers’ violence.

It is of the utmost importance to keep journalists not only in your country but everywhere safe from this type of violence. This incident is not the first of its kind. In recent weeks, border police attacked working journalists and beat them, sprayed them with pepper spray, and shoved them down.

Please see to it that these officers are punished for their actions and that preventative measures are taken in the future with your soldiers to ensure these kinds of incidents do not happen again.

Sincerely,
