Target: Dinko Cvitan, State Attorney General of Croatia
Goal: Demand punishment for violent attackers who assaulted LGBT activists during a pride march.
Counter protesters threw stones at those in celebration at a pro-LGBT march and one attendee was jumped by 20 people for posting about being in the march. Some victims were hospitalized and their cases were reported to police.
The rights of LGBT people in Croatia is on the rise. The European country was ranked fifth on a list of countries in Europe supporting LGBT efforts. With support rising and more acceptance spreading, a pride march in the country is meant to celebrate equal rights and give those affected a voice. However, at a recent pride march in Montenegro, Croatia, the celebration was violently put to an end.
This is not the first case of violence toward LGBT activists in Croatia. This summer at a pride march on the coast of Croatia, the same type of violence occurred. This case never resulted in charges against the attackers despite the LGBT group leader receiving death threats.
The recent Montenegro case has put 70 people into detainment, however no criminal charges have been brought upon them. These attackers are estimated to have caused $30,000 in damage to the Croatian town. The rioters broke windows of nearby businesses and cars and set fire to dumpsters in the area.
Cases like this one have been put to rest in the past with the violent rioters facing no punishment. Prosecutors are reported to be arranging only minor charges for these vicious aggressors. Sign this petition to urge the Croatian justice system to give the harshest possible punishment to the rioters and ensure advocates for LGBT people are kept safe in their efforts to fight for their rights.
Dear Mr. Cvitan,
A recent LGBT pride march in Montenegro ended in violence and injustice for the activists celebrating equality. Marchers were attacked by rioters and had stones thrown at them, windows broken around them and dumpsters around town put up in flames.
These destructive aggressors are estimated to have caused $30,000 in damage to the town. Their actions are not to be forgiven, however in the past they have been. In a case this past summer, rioters were able to walk free after sending death threats to the leader of an LGBT rights group.
Please ensure that justice is brought upon this saddening incident. The people of Croatia should feel safe celebrating their pride and advocating for their rights. These marches are meant to be a time of celebration to provide unity for those who undergo challenges from being apart of the LGBT community. Give them a voice that is not threatened by violence. Bring the toughest possibly penalty upon these attackers for their actions and send a message that these violent acts are not okay.
