Target: Representative Bob Brady, Democrat, Pennsylvania
Goal: Apologize for disrespecting the Pope and his historic visit by stealing and drinking from his water glass.
A U.S. representative showed an unbelievable amount of disrespect after Pope Francis made a historic congressional address. Representative Bob Brady of Pennsylvania bragged to the press that he stole Pope Francis’ water glass, which still some water in it, and proceeded to drink from it. According to the “Philadelphia Daily News,” Brady, a Roman Catholic, stated that not many people know someone who “drank out of the same glass as the Pope.”
This isn’t the first time Brady has done this. Apparently, the representative also stole President Obama’s water glass and drank from it after his first inaugural address. The purpose of Brady’s propensity for consuming “famous” water is unclear, but it certainly leaves a sour taste in many people’s mouths. NPR radio poked fun at the incident, saying Brady’s actions certainly suggested he broke a few of the Ten Commandments, but this actually isn’t funny.
This congressional address was the first ever from a Pope. It was a monumental and historic event, with the potential of aligning the United States with world politics and placing our country in a better position. One of our own, one of our elected, tainted the event by stealing a glass, drinking from it, and then bragging about it. This is not only immature, but also embarrassing and disrespectful to the Pope and the olive branch he extended with his visit.
Demand Representative Bob Brady apologize for his immature actions. We are a country filled with better people than what he is representing.
Dear Representative Brady,
Pope Francis’ recent congressional address was a positive step in the history of the United States. It was also a positive step in our positioning within world politics. Pope Francis did what no other Pope before him has done and took the time to engage with the United States Congress. Your actions following his address were embarrassing, immature, and made a mockery of Pope Francis and his historic visit.
It might have seemed humorous or even a blessing to take the Pope’s water glass and drink out of it after he was done, but in actuality, the action was extremely impolite. In fact, it was downright rude. As a nation, we are struggling with our international image and relations enough. We have been called “ugly Americans” for centuries by other cultures who fail to understand our manners, or, in this case, lack thereof.
As an elected representative of your people, you have a responsibility to show dignity and respect when serving in your position of U.S. Representative. You failed to do so here. Kindly apologize to Pope Francis and the rest of us for your frat boy behavior after the Pope’s congressional address.
