Target: Attorney General Loretta Lynch
Goal: Push for the maximum punishment for the border patrol agent accused of unlawfully shooting and killing a Mexican teenager.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Lonnie Ray Swartz is accused of unlawfully shooting and killing Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez with a semi-automatic pistol. The family of the 16-year-old boy says the murder was excessive and unreasonable.
Rodriguez was shot while walking on a street that runs along the U.S. border fence in Mexico. U.S. Border Patrol agents supposedly fired 14 to 30 shots and struck the boy at least 10 times. Border Patrol claims they were going after a group suspected of attempting to illegally enter the U.S. They say the group tried to throw rocks at them, so the agents then fired shots across the border.
The boy’s family claims Rodriguez was simply walking home after playing basketball and didn’t throw any rocks. The indictment in this case comes at a time when talk about illegal immigration and immigration is enflamed, with people like Donald Trump spewing hateful claims that Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers. This kind of rhetoric spreads racism and encourages these kinds of heated exchanges.
Tell officials to push for the maximum punishment for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Lonnie Ray Swartz if he’s found to have unlawfully shot and killed Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez.
Dear Attorney General Lynch,
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Lonnie Ray Swartz allegedly shot and killed Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez unlawfully with a semi-automatic pistol while the Mexican teenager was walking home from a game of basketball near the U.S. Mexico border. Claims differ between the family and Border Patrol, but with the general feeling towards Mexicans right now, there’s a big chance of injustice here.
If the accusations are true, this is a horrific crime that took the life of a innocent teenage boy.
I urge you to push for the maximum punishment for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Lonnie Ray Swartz if he’s found to have unlawfully shot and killed Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez.
