Ban Cruel Pig Gestation Crates

Target: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Goal: Ban cramped crates that force mother pigs to remain completely immobile for months

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is currently considering a bill that would ban pig gestation crates in his state. These extremely cramped crates are designed to force nursing pigs to remain on their sides, unable to get up or move more than a couple inches. The meat industry justifies these metal prisons by saying they prevent the sow from rolling over and crushing her newborns. However, mother pigs are often left in their gestation crates for months, which is far longer than would ever be necessary. Plus, pregnant pigs are often put into these crates before they’ve even given birth.

Governor Christie has until early December 2014 to sign the bill into law. He has previously vetoed a similar bill with the reasoning that “the decision should be left to his Department of Agriculture.” However, it’s clear that the state’s Department of Agriculture has failed to do its job, as nothing has been done stop this incredibly cruel practice. It’s time for Christie to take responsibility for what happens under his watch and end the use of crates that cause significant harm to the mental and physical health of pigs.

By signing this petition, you’ll urge Governor Christie to sign the bill that will put an end to any use of pig gestation crates in the state of New Jersey. Although there isn’t a lot of pig farming in the area, it’s important that we stand up to animal cruelty wherever we find it. Send a message to Christie that you won’t tolerate his selfish inaction while innocent animals are suffering needlessly.

Dear Governor Christie,

You currently have on your desk a bill that would end the use of gestation crates on pregnant and nursing pigs in the state of New Jersey. I understand that you’ve already vetoed a similar bill because you thought that the decision should be left up to your Department of Agriculture. Unfortunately, though the use of these crates has been derided as exceptionally cruel and unnecessary by animal rights groups across the country, nothing has been done about this practice within your state.

Though there is a minor risk of newborn piglets being crushed when their mothers roll over on them, the use of these gestation crates goes far beyond what is necessary. Pigs are often crammed into these tiny metal cages that barely let them move at all while they’re still pregnant and left there for months after they give birth. Not only do these cages cause physical harm and severe mental stress to the sows, they don’t allow the mothers to interact with her babies. These crates are horrifically cruel for both the mother and her young, and should be banned immediately.

I urge you to sign the bill that would ban this undeniably cruel practice. Nothing has been done about the issue since you vetoed the last bill, so it’s clear that you need to step up and do the job that your Department of Agriculture has failed to do. Both Republicans and Democrats support the ban, so there’s no reason for you to delay action any further. Please do your part to end this animal cruelty as soon as possible.
