Target: Michael Horn, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America
Goal: Recall Volkswagen cars equipped with devices that cheat emission tests.
Recently, a notice was mailed to Volkswagen AG accusing them of installing software to purposely trick and fictitiously pass federal emissions tests. The testing and regulation of cars for fuel economy plays an imperative role in controlling air pollution throughout the United States.
The notice accused Volkswagen of building and installing malicious programs that have been sold in over 482,000 diesel cars since 2008. This software deceives EPA tests by activating emission controls only during emission tests, subsequently releasing up to 40 times the permitted amount of nitrogen oxides during normal use. While individual automobiles may not create a direct health threat to the owners, these emissions have been linked to breathing issues and to millions of deaths, greatly putting the health of the public at risk.
Regardless of the cheating committed by Volkswagen and it’s subsidiary Audi AG, the EPA has not issued a recall of the five types of four cylinder diesels involved, and is leaving it up to Volkswagen to bring the questioned emission systems into compliance. Volkswagen admitted earlier this month to using this “defeat device” which was programmed to detect when vehicles are being tested to meet emission requirements and went on to claim that it has saved the company money on warranty claims and makes the automobiles more fun to drive.
Congress representative Frank Pallone is asking the EPA to consider severe action, as the Justice Department and EPA settled with seven other diesel automobile manufacturers in 1998 for more than a billion dollars. Consequences and punishment of the company aside, Volkswagen should take immediate responsibility by recalling the affected vehicles and having future models brought into compliance with EPA standards. Sign to demand the company issues an immediate recall.
Dear Michael Horn,
As you know, Volkswagen AG has been accused of building and installing defeat devices in five types of four cylinder diesel engines on the market since 2008. Tested on a dynamometer, the vehicle in question pass EPA tests with flying colors, yet under real world conditions they are spewing emissions 15 to 35% higher than legally allowed.
Along with the rapidly increasing number of aware individuals becoming disgusted by your alarming disregard for the safety of our environment and communities dependent upon it, Congressman Frank Pallone is calling for strict punishment. As part of that community and in effort to more quickly resolve the problem, I ask that you immediately recall the vehicles effected and remove the defeat devices allowing your company to pollute our earth with harmful gases that we do not legally allow under any circumstances. Fixing the problem before our environment suffers any more negative consequences would be the moral thing to do, regardless of the punishment that will ensue for the alleged crimes against the federal government perpetrated by Volkswagen.
