Target: Gina McCarthy, Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Goal: Punish Volkswagen for circumventing federal emissions tests and having cars release emissions at 40 times the federal standard.
Volkswagen was found to be making cars with a device allowing the vehicles to avoid federal emissions standards and release nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the federal standard, contributing to environmental damage. Exposure to nitrous oxide has been linked to respiratory health issues like asthma attacks.
The EPA said Volkswagen vehicles in recent years had a device that uses software to turn on full emissions controls during official lab tests but turns them down during regular driving. The EPA called it illegal and a threat to public health. The Environmental Protection Agency and California both issued Volkswagen a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act.
One of the possible reasons Volkswagen might have done this is because the the torque and acceleration of a diesel-fueled car may be better when emission controls aren’t on.
In a time when many automakers are creating vehicles with less emissions, it’s upsetting that Volkswagen is not only making cars that release a massive amount of emissions but also lying about it. It’s completely unethical and not only harms consumers, but also the environment.
Urge the EPA to severely punish Volkswagen for bypassing federal emissions tests and producing cars that release insane amounts of emissions.
Dear Ms. McCarthy,
It’s amazing that we keep making advances that allow us to make cars that are better for public health and the environment. So the fact that Volkswagen put devices in its cars to bypass federal emissions standards is both saddening and offensive. The car company may have done this to attempt to make the cars perform better, which shows a true lack of engineering on their part if they have to release an insane amount of emissions to do so.
This move is completely unethical and not only shows that Volkswagen cannot be trusted, but they have a blatant disregard for federal standards, public health and the environment. A clear message must be sent that this will not be tolerated and that Volkswagen’s case should act as warning to other automakers.
I urge you to severely punish Volkswagen for bypassing federal emissions tests and producing cars that release insane amounts of emissions.
