Fight Representative’s Boycott of Papal Address

Pope Francis will addressing Congress for the first time ever on Sept. 24.

Target: Representative Paul Gosar, R-Arizona

Goal: Show respect for differing opinions and do not boycott Pope Francis’ historic address.

Representative Paul Gosar has announced that he will boycott Pope Francis’ congressional address. Gosar states that the reason he is boycotting the historic address is Pope Francis’ views on climate change, which Gosar calls “false science and ideology.” Odd. Scientists throughout the world, including our own EPA, have confirmed that climate change is real and has been for many years.

A self-professed Catholic, Gosar goes on to attack the Pope publically, stating that Pope Francis is not sticking to “standard Christian theology.” In an editorial written for, Gosar acknowledges that the earth’s climate is changing, but he contends that it is doing so “with or without man.” Another part of Gosar’s written attack accuses the Pope of promoting “questionable science as Catholic dogma.”

Many find Gosar’s boycott ludicrous, not to mention inappropriate. John Boehner, House Speaker, is also catholic, yet he has made it clear he does not support argumentative action against the Pope. Boehner said he understands that Pope Francis is unique in that he speaks his mind and attacks the status quo, and Boehner respectfully refuses to argue with him.

Jesuit priest James Martin publicly announced his disapproval of Gosar’s position on Twitter. His tweet said Gosar’s actions were “unbelievable” and asked the representative whether he’d forgotten that Jesuit tradition includes listening to different points of view. Considering this is the first time a pope has ever addressed Congress, this boycott must be stopped.

Fight Representative Paul Gosar’s boycott of Pope Francis’ Congressional address. We cannot afford to taint positive interaction with a powerful dignitary based upon unfounded belief.

Dear Representative Gosar,

As stated in the bible that you read, there is a time for everything. There is also a place for everything, and attacking Pope Francis on the cusp of the very first Papal congressional address is neither the time nor the place. What an embarrassment you are to the United States of America.

Whether you agree with Pope Francis’ position on global warming or not, you, as a representative of our nation, have a responsibility to show international dignitaries respect, and that certainly includes the pope. Your vicious attack of Pope Francis and his beliefs surrounding global climate change was inappropriate and uncalled for, and your plan to boycott his address only serves to embarrass you and our great nation further.

If you want to boycott something, make is something useful, and factual for that matter. Your position on global warming is the one filled with rhetoric. Scientists worldwide have proven that we humans are destroying our environment (I believe the bible you read also issues a warning surrounding that). From where are you receiving your information?

I could take a more tactful approach in my request that you not boycott Pope Francis’ congressional address, but I figured you should be served what you’ve dished out. Kindly do not confirm the hypocrite you are by boycotting the address. The only thing it will serve is to show to the rest of world what a true “ugly American” is, and isn’t time we got out from underneath that stigma?
