List the American Eel as Endangered

Target: Dan Ashe, Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Save the American eel by protecting it and listing it as endangered.

A decision will soon be made on whether or not to list the American eel as endangered. Environmental activists want federal officials to list the American eel as threatened, which would give the fish protections that would limit fishermen’s ability to fish for them.

The market for baby eels is booming, having a drastic effect on the eels’ population. In addition, more than 80 percent of the eels’ habitat has been lost due to human-built dams that stop migration. There needs to be more regulatory oversight to ensure the eels don’t die out.

Fisherman are fighting against having the eels listed as endangered since that move would affect their livelihood. However, it’s unfair to the eels to have their habitats destroyed and the chance of dying out from extinction.

Humans have to take responsibility for the footprint they leave on this earth and the effects our behavior has on the other creatures of the world. Tell United States Fish and Wildlife Service officials to protect the American eel and list the animal as endangered.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dan Ashe,

Out-of-control commercial fishing has had a drastic effect on American eels and their habitats. Baby eels are seen as extremely valuable, creating a booming market for the fish. This is causing a major decline in the eel population.

Officials must step in to save the American eel from these practices by listing them as endangered. These innocent animals need more protection from having their lives and homes taken from them. It’s not fair for the eels to face this at the hands of humans. We cannot let the American eel go extinct.

I urge you to protect the American eel and list the animal as endangered.

Sincerely,
