Increase Mental Health Care at University After Fatal Shooting

Target: President of Delta State University William N. LaForge

Goal: Make mental health care more readily available to staff and students on campus of Delta State after fatal shooting.

Professor Shannon Lamb at Delta State University allegedly shot and killed fellow professor Ethan Smith, as well as the woman living with him named Amy Prentiss. After over a day-long manhunt for the suspect, Lamb ran from his car into the woods off the side of the road and shot himself. President LaForge stated to the press that Lamb had been teaching a few geography and social studies courses and had requested a reduced class load due to medical reasons, which he was only aware of because of information received from a senior administrator.

Most of the senior staff and health officials at the school were not aware of Shannon Lamb’s medical issues, and it is still not clear if these known medical issues were regarding his mental health. However, it is clear that Lamb had abnormal impulses and at least some lacking in empathy, and if he had access to mental health facilities before this incident he may have been able to seek help and treatment before acting out and ending his life. Tell President William LaForge to create an anonymous mental health care facility for students and staff.

Dear President William N. LaForge,

I would first like to apologize for the terrifying tragedy that occurred on your campus recently, and for the devastating loss of two of your respected teaching faculty. Both professors had truly amazing talent and intelligence, and it is shocking to have to lose them this way.

You stated that Shannon Lamb had recently reduced his class load due to some personal medical issues, but it was never specified what type of medical issues Lamb was suffering from. In fact, it doesn’t seem clear that any of the authoritative or health staff on campus knew the specifics of Lamb’s condition. If Lamb had had access to mental health facilities either on or near campus, there is a strong possibility that he could have seeked treatment and assistance before acting out in rage. If these facilities don’t exist in the future, this could happen with another student or staff member.

Please give your university the care and resources it needs by including an anonymous and confidential mental health facility on campus at Delta State. Mental health repair and maintenance is the first step to violence prevention and a better environment for learning and thriving.
