Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop American gas companies’ continued drilling in Thailand that is making villagers sick and ruining crops.
American gas companies have been conducting oil drilling in Thailand that villagers say is making them sick and ruining nearby crops. Over 200 residents in communities near drilling sites have complained about skin and respiratory problems. Six people have been hospitalized.
Villagers have tried to complain and stop the drilling, but the Thai government has largely cracked down on dissenters. People opposing the drilling have said the companies are using the controversial method of fracking, linked to water pollution and triggering earthquakes, in their operations. Companies like the American-owned APICO say they’re not using fracking, but work documents say fracking has been attempted and include reports of wastewater ponds that are consistent with fracking .
Opposition to the drilling also alleges that rubber trees and other agriculture have been damaged by airborne chemicals from the drilling, such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases. Locals in one village reported that their water has become brown and unusable. They’ve said that when the operations started, it smelled so bad that the villagers couldn’t breathe.
It’s unjust that this is going on despite concerns from local citizens. The Thai government isn’t going to do anything to stop it because there are Thai companies linked as subsidiaries to the American companies. Tell American officials to take action on the villagers’ concerns to stop this damage to the environment and local communities.
Dear President Obama,
American gas companies have been conducting oil drilling in Thailand that villagers say is causing skin and respiratory problems, putting people in the hospital, damaging agriculture with chemicals, and turning water brown and unusable.
The Thai government will continue to let this happen because it financially benefits them. They’re cracking down on any locals who oppose the drilling, despite the chance that these companies are using the polluting and dangerous method of fracking.
It’s not fair that we are allowing American companies to destroy the environment and sicken people in international communities. We should be protecting these people and listening to their concerns. I urge you to speak with Thailand and to take action on the villagers’ concerns.
