Justice for Children Allegedly Kept in Shipping Crate

The children didn't have nearly this much room in their 8-by-10 crate.

Target: Jean Peters Baker, Jackson County, MO Prosecutor and Keith R. Ludwig, Kansas City, MO City Prosecutor

Goal: Prosecute woman who allegedly admitted keeping her children in a shipping crate underground.

A four-year-old and a six-year-old were allegedly kept in a shipping crate stored in an underground cave for several days. The children were found by Kansas City, Missouri police, who were on the premises investigating a stolen car operation. Their mother, Brittany Mugrauer, reportedly admitted to confining the young ones and was arrested on Sept. 11, 2015 under felony child endangerment charges.

The children had allegedly been held in an 8-by-10-foot wooden crate, which only had car bench seats and two blankets for them. Thin wires and trash were also found inside the container, and the children were described as barefoot and dirty. It is unknown whether the children were starving and thirsty; reports remain sketchy as to the exact condition of the toddlers and their living space.

Mugrauer allegedly acknowledged she was aware her children were in the container. Her reasons for confining her children have not been disclosed, but they seem moot regardless. No child should ever be left barefoot, filthy and in such conditions. The welfare of the children must be top priority in an effort to help them heal from this traumatic ordeal.

These children are too young to speak for themselves, so we must speak for them. Demand swift justice be served upon Brittany Mugrauer, who has allegedly admitted she knew her children were confined to a wooden shipping crate for several days. Mugrauer must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if found guilty of this horrific child abuse.

Dear Ms. Baker and Mr. Ludwig,

One can only be thankful that your county’s police were investigating Brittany Mugrauer’s house under suspicion of a car theft operation. Had they not, her children, only four and six, might still be locked up in a wooden shipping container underground. Who would confine their children in such squalid conditions in a cave? This is a terrifying form of child abuse and justice must be served.

It’s been reported that the children only had two small blankets to keep them warm, and that they were found dirty and barefoot amongst garbage in the container. Who knows if these kids had any food or water? Yes, these are the preliminary reports, and I understand that a full investigation is underway. This does not mean, however, that it is too early to speak out on behalf of these children.

No child should ever be treated the way these kids were allegedly treated. And no mother should ever have the right to have custody of her children if she’s going to lock them underground in a shipping crate. If found guilty, this woman must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and these children should be placed into child services for proper fostering and adoption.

Speak out on behalf of this four-year-old and this six-year-old and prosecute Brittany Mugrauer for child abuse and felony child endangerment. She must be punished for such a horrific crime.
