Target: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio

Goal: Applaud the vote by NYC officials to require chain restaurants to add a warning icon next to high-sodium items on menus.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Warn Consumers About the Dangers of Salty Foods, New York City voted to require chain restaurants to add a warning icon next to high-sodium items on menus. This is a huge step for progress considering that about 90% of Americans eat too much salt, according to the FDA.

Customers will be informed of the icon by signs at registers that will explain that the icon “indicates that the sodium (salt) content of this item is higher than the total daily recommended limit (2300 mg). High sodium intake can increase blood pressure and risk of heart disease and stroke.”

The salt lobby is obviously upset with this new ruling, claiming that reports of Americans consuming too much salt is untrue. However, it seems like a step in the right direction that Americans can more easily access information about what they’re putting into their bodies. Armed with this information, they can make a decision on what they want to do.

Applaud the vote by NYC officials to require chain restaurants to add a warning icon next to high-sodium items on menus in a step towards ensuring a healthier America.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor de Blasio,

I am so glad to hear that New York City voted to require chain restaurants to add a warning icon next to high-sodium items on menus. This is a huge step in the right direction considering so many Americans may be consuming a high-sodium diet that leads to health problems like increased blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

This move is a step in the right direction to allow Americans to be more informed about the foods they eat and what they are putting into their body. As America seems to get more and more unhealthy, moves like this can hopefully help to combat that. I applaud the vote by NYC officials to require chain restaurants to add a warning icon next to high-sodium items on menus and hope issues like this continue to be tackled moving forward.

Sincerely,
