Target: Gustavo González López, Minister of Popular Power for Interior, Justice and Peace
Goal: Order a retrial of the case against Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who is fighting back against the corrupt government and didn’t receive a fair trial.
Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was recently sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of inciting violence during protests where 43 people were killed. The deaths included people from both sides of the political spectrum.
Lopez rallied people to take to the streets and peacefully protest President Nicolas Maduro’s administration because of the numerous problems facing the country, but unfortunately those demonstrations became violent. Venezuela has been in a constant state of civil unrest due to corruption and extreme economic issues.
His defense team said it was not a fair trial, thanks to problems like the judge hearing 138 witnesses for the prosecution but only one of the 50 witnesses and pieces of evidence submitted by Lopez’s defense. Lopez is not the only opposition leader who has been held in detention with mixed opinions on his or her fate.
The US government and the United Nations have called for the release of these leaders, citing that the country needs to ensure democracy. Urge officials to order a fair retrial of the case against Leopoldo Lopez.
Dear Minister González López,
Leopoldo Lopez has been sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of inciting violence during protests where 43 people were killed. Lopez encouraged people to peacefully protest, not to become violent.
His trial was not performed fairly. The judge on the case heard 138 witnesses for the prosecution but only one of the 50 witnesses and pieces of evidence submitted by Lopez’s defense. I urge you to support democracy and fairness in your country by order a retrial of the case against Leopoldo Lopez.
