Target: The Family of Freddie Gray
Goal: Applaud the settlement in the death of Freddie Gray as the first step towards possible justice.
Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Demand Justice for Death of Freddie Gray, the parents of Freddie Gray reached a tentative $6.4 million settlement with the city of Baltimore after their son was critically injured in police custody and later died. The settlement comes just days before a judge will hear arguments on whether to move the trials for six Baltimore officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death.
Gray’s spine was severely injured while being transported in a police van after being arrested. Gray died at the hospital a week later, sparking protests about police brutality and the treatment of black men by police in America.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said the settlement does not mean the officers in the case will have an innocent or guilty verdict. She said it was in the best interest of the city, and others say the settlement was a vital step in restoring the public’s faith in local government.
There’s still a road ahead, but we can applaud that this settlement is a step in the right direction towards ensuring justice for the death of Freddie Gray. Sign the petition below if you agree.
Dear Gray Family,
I cannot even begin to fathom the grief you have dealt with these past months. I hope it brings you some comfort to know there are others out there thinking of you and supporting you in this battle after losing one of your loved ones in such an unnecessary way.
Your settlement with the city of Baltimore is not the end of this road, but it’s a step in the right direction towards bringing justice to Freddie and hopefully a sliver of peace to your family after being torn apart by this tragedy.
