Praise President Obama for Paid Sick Leave Order

Goal: Thank Obama for signing an executive order making annual sick leave mandatory for construction employees working on federal projects.

On Labor Day 2015, President Barack Obama signed an executive order making seven days of sick leave per year a mandatory benefit for federal construction project workers. By signing the order, Obama indicated it will “give about 300,000 working Americans access to paid sick leave for the first time.” Included in the executive order is paid time off for family care.

The president’s executive order was based off the policies of “model employers” within the United States. After reviewing the paid sick leave policies of many private employers, the executive order was drafted to allow workers on federal construction projects to earn an hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. The order applies to federal contractors only and does not affect private sector employers.

Another inspiration behind the executive order was sick pay models throughout the world. Currently, the U.S. is the only first-world nation that allows companies to deny working mothers paid maternity leave. This places America behind many other nations when it comes to taking care of its workers–something Obama has pledged to change throughout his presidency.

Workers positively affected by the executive order will not have to wait to begin accumulating their sick pay. The executive order was designated as “effective immediately,” and it will cover future federal contracts as the nation moves into 2016.

This new policy is Obama’s latest effort in building a nation that encourages its people do it better. Let’s thank President Obama for taking a stand for hard-working Americans and implementing mandatory paid sick leave for all federal contractors.

This latest move brings the United States one step closer to providing for its employees as other great nations throughout the world do. We can stand proud with the implementation of this mandatory benefit.

This latest legislation not only keeps us working, but also keeps us working happier. Paid sick time is a benefit every employee should have, and you have ensured that employees working on federal construction projects now have that. Thank you.
