Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Automatically register everyone who has a driver’s license to vote in elections.
Millions of people could finally exercise their right to vote and have a say in how our country is run if a new bill that would automatically register people to vote when they get a driver’s license becomes law in California. This would be a major win for our democracy. Demand that this proposal becomes law as soon as possible.
American democracy is in a dismal state. Less that two-thirds of all eligible voters around the country cast a ballot in the 2012 presidential election. The situation is even worse in the nation’s most populated state, California, where only 56 percent of all those who could vote in 2012 showed up to the polls. The state’s last election in 2014 saw those numbers dip even lower to 42 percent.
Clearly this is an unsustainable state of affairs, but thankfully California has a plan to combat it. A bill, currently being discussed in the state legislature, would link Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) enrollment with voter registration, automatically registering everyone who is 18 years or older and who has a driver’s license to vote. Officials estimate that this could bring over 6 million Americans to the polls in future elections.
American democracy can not work if Americans don’t participate in its processes, and automatic registration like the kind being discussed in California is the best way to ensure that people get the chance to do so. Sign the petition below to demand that California Governor Jerry Brown sign this bill into law as soon as he can so that democracy can thrive.
Dear Governor Brown,
I am writing you today regarding a bill currently working its way through the state legislature that would connect DMV records with the voter registration process so that all licensed Californians who are of age would be automatically registered to vote. This is a vital proposal that you should be able support without hesitation.
For American democracy to truly flourish, every American should have the chance to participate in elections. As I’m sure you know, though, that is not what is going on across the country or in your state. To often, the majority of eligible voters simply don’t show up to cast a ballot, or aren’t even registered in the first place.
This bill would go a long way towards fixing that. By automatically registering everyone to vote, your state could bring in more than 6 million new voters on election days vying to make their voices heard. What’s more is that the majority of these people would be from marginalized communities whose voices are all too often ignored by our government’s leaders.
It’s your duty to leave American and Californian democracy stronger than it was when you came into office. This bill is the way to do that. I urge you to sign it into law as soon as it arrives on your desk.
