Target: President of the United States, Barack Obama
Goal: Demand that the U.S. military reveal the chemicals it exposed its veterans to when conducting biological warfare testing on enlisted men.
From 1922 to 1975, American service members were exposed to dangerous chemicals as part of the U.S. military’s biological and chemical warfare testing program. Military personnel were induced to experience fear, hallucinations, hysteria and panic. The military enticed servicemen to sign up for the voluntary testing with incentives and failed to reveal to the men the testing chemicals and their associated risks. To date, the U.S. military refuses to reveal to veterans which biological agents they were exposed to, disabling the veterans and medical professionals from determining how this chemical exposure is affecting their health.
Testing was conducted on tens of thousands of men, and many may have perished because of the experiments. It is known that World War II veterans were exposed to mustard gas, but other types of exposure remain a mystery. NPR reports that one military veteran, Bill Blazinski, volunteered for military testing in 1968 when he was 20 years old. Blazinski now suffers from chronic lymphocytic leukemia and remains emotionally scarred from the experience, which included injecting him with two drugs: one, an antidote against nerve agent poisoning and another drug to prevent the side effects from the antidote.
Our veterans have been left with no alternative other than to sue the United States Armed Forces in an effort to find out what was done to them and the related side effects. Our veterans should not have to sue the U.S. Government for this information. They have a right to know, and they have a right to the medical care necessary to treat any illness caused by these military experiments. Demand that President Obama issue an executive order forcing the U.S. military to reveal the chemicals it used on military test subjects.
Dear President Obama,
For over 50 years, the U.S. Armed Forces subjected military personnel to inhumane and questionable biological and chemical agent testing. Our veterans suffered during this testing and continue to suffer today. They need to know exactly what chemicals they were exposed to so that they may receive the proper treatment, yet the military refuses to reveal such information.
These men served our country and protected our freedom. They were coerced into agreeing to be test subjects and misled as to the extent of the danger they faced. Although guaranteed they would be monitored while undergoing the tests, many were left alone, hallucinating and harming themselves.
No human should be subjected to this cruel and inhumane treatment, and at the very least, our former soldiers now have a right to know what was done to them and to be cared for as they suffer the aftereffects. As our nation’s president and head over the military, you have an obligation to issue an order demanding the military release this information to its veterans.
Our men should never have suffered the way they did, but what is done is done. Make things right by enforcing action to provide these men with the information and healthcare they need to become well after this horrific example of human experimentation within our own country.
