Target: Jefferson County District Attorney Peter Weir
Goal: Charge man alleged to have shot two fleeing black bear cubs with a felony.
Two beautiful black bear cubs are dead after an as-of-yet unidentified man reportedly murdered them with a shotgun for rummaging through his garbage in Evergreen, Colorado. People who live in bear habitat need to respect them, not kill them in cold blood. Demand that this man be subjected to felony charges for this heinous violence.
Black bears have called the state of Colorado home for hundreds of thousands of years, and officials estimate that around 12,000 currently reside within the state’s borders. Unfortunately, three of those thousands—a mother and her two cubs—were recently in the wrong place at the wrong time in the town of Evergreen, west of Denver.
They were rummaging through a home’s garbage cans early one morning looking for food when the home’s resident, a man whom the police have not yet officially identified, came out to investigate. Alarmed, he reportedly fired two rubber bullets in an attempt to scare the bears away. Unfortunately, as the bears were running away, the man’s dog ran out to chase them.
This is when the cubs’ fate was decided, through no fault of their own. Concerned for the safety of his dog’s life, the man allegedly loaded a live round and fired, hitting both of the bear cubs. One was killed instantly, and the other was wounded so badly that it had to be put down. The mother bear had no choice but to continue to run off into the woods.
Police are investigating and weighing charging the unidentified man with misdemeanor hunting bear out of season and felony illegal discharging of a weapon. Killing two bear cubs who were, by all reports, already running away is unforgivable. Sign the petition below to demand that felony charges are brought against this alleged killer.
Dear District Attorney Weir,
I am writing you today regarding the two black bear cubs that were recently murdered in Evergreen. I urge you to do what you can to ensure that they receive the justice they deserve.
There can be no question that the use of live ammunition against bear cubs who were, as reports indicate, already alarmed and running away from the home in question was excessive and cruel. The man’s dog was under no imminent threat, so there was no justification for shooting those fleeing animals.
A person so eager to kill baby bears needs to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. I urge you to charge this individual with felony illegal discharging of a firearm so that his utter disregard for these beautiful animals can be punished.
