Success: Dept. of Justice Warns Jindal that Defunding Planned Parenthood is Illegal

Target: U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch

Goal: Applaud the Department of Justice for stepping in and warning Bobby Jindal that cutting funding to Planned Parenthood is illegal.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s “Restore Medicaid Funding to Planned Parenthood,” the Department of Justice has warned Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal that cutting funding to Planned Parenthood violates federal law.

The warning comes shortly after Planned Parenthood and three anonymous patients sued Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals for Jindal’s attempting to block Medicaid patients from obtaining services from any qualified provider. They stated this attempted blocking is violates federal law.

The DOJ said Jindal’s attempt to block Medicaid funding “without providing any justification” violates Louisiana’s obligations under the Medicaid statute by denying beneficiaries their right “to obtain medical care from the qualified providers of their choice.”

Jindal’s decision comes amid videos released by an anti-abortion group claiming Planned Parenthood profits off selling aborted fetal tissue. He says Planned Parenthood doesn’t deserve state funding, but unfortunately for him, federal law trumps that.

Applaud the DOJ for standing up against these illegal actions and protecting Planned Parenthood.

Dear Attorney General Loretta Lynch,

I am glad to hear that your department warned Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal that cutting funding to Planned Parenthood is illegal. Jindal was so quick to jump on board with hidden camera videos by an anti-abortion group that attempted to defraud Planned Parenthood, which the group is now under legal fire for.

Jindal cannot violate Louisiana’s obligations under the Medicaid statute, and I applaud the DOJ for standing up against his wrongful actions and protecting Planned Parenthood and its patients.
