Target: Phoenix, Arizona City Prosecutor Will Gonzalez
Goal: Don’t charge innocent mom who accidentally left baby in shopping cart.
A mother of four allegedly accidentally left her baby in a shopping cart and drove away. She says one of her older children asked where the baby was, and that’s when the horror of her mistake hit her — she’d forgotten him in the shopping cart back at the store.
The mother says she rushed back to the store and found her baby in the hands of an off-duty police officer. The baby was examined by doctors and returned to his parents. Police initially believed it was an honest mistake until a bystander shared the photo online of the baby in the cart and the public demanded punishment. The baby was obviously in good health and the police returned him, so it makes no sense that they would suddenly want to punish the mother.
Although the mother explained herself publicly and police thought her fit enough to have her baby back, she now faces child endangerment charges — a misdemeanor — all because strangers demanded punishment. It seems the police have allowed their original, professional judgement to be second-guessed.
The mother’s public response shows that she genuinely feels bad for her mistake and is a caring, fit mother. Yet because strangers online can’t forgive a mother of four’s simple mistake, she may be punished. Please ask the Phoenix Prosecutor’s office to drop charges and let this innocent mother go back to her life. She doesn’t deserve to be treated like a criminal and the public scrutiny alone has been punishment enough for her.
Dear Phoenix City Prosecutor Will Gonzalez,
A busy mother of four left her baby in a shopping cart. Although the baby was returned to her and police said they wouldn’t press charges, she now faces child endangerment charges. Obviously police and doctors thought she was fit enough to take the baby back immediately, so it’s senseless to charge her with a misdemeanor all because people online demanded she be punished.
Treating this innocent mother like a criminal will only hurt the four children who need her. We urge you to drop the charges as she’s already faced plenty of punishment from the public scrutiny and criticism she continuously receives now.
