Target: Sheikh Mohammed Bin, Vice President and Prime Minister
Goal: Disclose the whereabouts of an activist held without charge.
Dr. Nasser bin Ghaith, a well-known economist who has been vocal about the need for public reform in the United Arab Emirates, has been arrested and is being held incommunicado. Neither he nor his family has been informed of the charges against him, and he is at risk of being tortured or ill-treated. Sign the petition and demanding both his whereabouts and his immediate release.
Dr. Bin Ghaith, who has been arrested before as a result of his political beliefs, was arrested at his workplace and brought back to his home, which was then searched by security officers for several hours. Several of his belongings were confiscated and he was brought to an undisclosed location. Amnesty International suspects he has been brought to a secret detention facility where detainees are often tortured in order to extract “confessions” that can later be used against them in court.
In addition to being at risk of torture Dr. Bin Ghaith has several medical conditions, including high blood pressure, that require medication. It is not known if he has access to any medical care where he is currently being held.
International human rights standards prohibit torture and ill-treatment, guarantee prisoners access to medical care, and prevent them from being imprisoned without charge. The UAE is in violation of a number of human rights laws and must rectify the situation immediately. Sign the petition and demand that Dr. Nasser bin Ghaith be freed as soon as possible, that his whereabouts be disclosed immediately, and that he be kept safe and healthy.
I demand to know the whereabouts of Dr. Nasser bin Ghaith, who was recently arrested at his workplace before being transported to an undisclosed location. He is at risk of torture and ill-treatment and requires medication for a serious medical condition. Please disclose his location immediately and release him if he has not been charged with an internationally-recognizable crime.
Dr. Bin Ghaith, an outspoken critic of the government, has been arrested before and kept in jail as a prisoner of conscience. His previous arrests make it highly likely that this arrest is politically motivated and therefore of dubious legitimacy. Universal human rights guarantee each of us freedom of expression. If Dr. Bin Ghaith cannot be charged with an internationally-recognizable criminal offense, he must be freed as soon as possible. In the meantime, his location should be released to protect him from further human rights violations.
