Fire Wildlife Officers Who Killed and Posed with Mountain Lion

Target: Steve Beam, Wildlife Director of the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources

Goal: Fire officers who shot mountain lion that showed no threat and then posed next to it in a picture.

A questionable picture has recently surfaced of Kentucky wildlife officers posing next to a mountain lion they shot and killed a few months ago. Action needs to be taken to ensure these men are fired, as it is clear from the photograph that they cared more about killing the animal than they ever did about trying to safely rescue and release it in a more suitable environment.

Wildlife officers are not only hired to protect the public, but they are also supposed to ensure the safety of animals whenever possible. Because the mountain lion was high up in a tree when it was shot, it did not pose a threat to anyone. Therefore, the officers could have opted to wait for a tranquilizer gun to arrive, as they had real guns on hand to protect themselves in case a dangerous situation arose. Instead, they allegedly chose to quickly kill the animal and pose proudly beside it in a tasteless photo.

While some argue that the animal presented a threat to the community, mountain lions attacking people is not a common occurrence. In fact, according to the Mountain Lion Foundation, a person has a better chance of being killed by a dog than he does by a mountain lion, as these animals generally do everything possible to avoid people.

Surprisingly, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has absolutely no problem with neither the picture nor with how the officers handled the situation.

Sign this petition and demand these wildlife officers be fired for the unprofessionalism they displayed. Wildlife officers who kill animals when they don’t pose a threat to society and then take a picture smiling next to their dead bodies are poor examples to citizens, and they are–most certainly–poor examples to our children.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Beam,

A controversial picture of the Kentucky wildlife officers who shot a mountain lion in December has recently come to surface. These officers need to be immediately fired, as it is thought by many that they displayed a great amount of unprofessionalism both before and after the shooting.

Although your organization agrees that the officers did the right thing, they could have made other choices to try and avoid this tragedy. They could have also made the ethical choice to not smile, pose and take a picture with the animal they claimed needed to be killed.

For all of these reasons, I urge you to recommend that these officers be fired and replaced with competent people who will make better efforts to preserve our unique wildlife. It is reprehensible that these officers chose to kill the animal before trying to take more humane measures and further that they found it OK to pose and smile next to its dead body afterwards.

Sincerely,

  1. Trigger happy cops. It could have been worse. They could have shot a camper dead, then try to cover up their evil deed by swearing (on the Christian Bible) that the camper “attacked” them.

What’s up with gov’t employees in Kentucky who feel they don’t have to follow the rules?

  3. These guys can’t I even call them men are no different than the dentist. Except they were paid by us taxpapers. What disgusting examples of the human race. Fire their asses without pay . Then charge them for illegal hunting if possible.

  4. Heather Brophy says:

WE PAY THAT SCUMS SALARY, FIRE HIS CRUEL,INHUMANE ASS NOW!

  5. Meeche Miller says:

Fire both of these rotten scum! They are on taxpayer jobs and killing innocent, scared animals is not a part of their job – they have no business in jobs that allow them to carry guns and shoot animals – NO justification for what they did and to make matters worse – they pose with the poor dead animal and are laughing about it – how dare they and to think they are so sure of their jobs that they can get away with this killing is awful – fire them and fire their supervisor for not having fired them on the spot!

  6. WELL WHAT AN ABSOLUTE TWAT, HOW BRAVE, WHAT A HERO, KILLING A BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL, WELL DONE YOU PIECE OF SCUM

  7. How tragic and how WRONG ! It seems that gov’t wildlife oficers very often act more like hunting enthusiasts than like the nature loving animal protectors they should be. Clearly the Kentucky wildlife dept is standing behind the monsters who are responsible for this inexcusable killing. The Eastern cougar is now extinct, thanks largely to POS selfish jerks like the ones who murdered this cat. We must not allow our government to be above the law or above our moral standards.

  8. How many innocent animals have they already killed that we do not know of?! Fire and imprison them

  10. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  11. They should be shot. I’m over the pathetic slap of the hand that trash like this receive when they participate in animal cruelty.

  12. You’re Wildlife Officers, for God’s sake! === if you’re not on the side of wildlife, then who are you? == SHAME ON THE BOTH OF YOU — you had options available — you could’ve tranquilized the lion, this magnificent animal who has every RIGHT to live == instead, you took the callous & immoral way out == killing this beautiful animal is cruel & unconscionable not to mention IRRATIONAL & merciless. === What do your grins tell us? == Did you get a big kick out of the kill? === Is your ego satisfied? == this mountain lion lost his life because of your insane & hateful decision to KILL! == You did WRONG!
