Target: Alabama Governor Robert J. Bentley
Goal: Stop mass closure of DMVs where citizens must go to get their voter IDs to be able to vote in elections.
Alabama is planning to further disenfranchise voters by closing the places where citizens must go to obtain voter IDs. In order to deal with their massive budget problem, the state is planning to close the vast majority of its Departments of Motor Vehicles. Due to Alabama’s voter ID laws, everyone must have a special ID in order to vote in any election, and the IDs can only be obtained at a state DMV.
The DMV closures will start in rural areas where the majority of the state’s poor live and where many people already have to drive long distances to access services like this. Closing dozens of DMVs could make it completely unrealistic for many citizens to reach the only place where they can get an ID to vote in federal and state elections.
Largely conservative states like Alabama are continuously ramping up their efforts to make it more difficult to vote. The people this affects the most are the ones who tend to vote for more liberal candidates–people of color, young people, and those living in poverty. The state’s leaders are clearly attempting to turn the country’s democracy into a complete farce.
Sign our petition to demand that the state of Alabama stop trying to disenfranchise the voters they don’t like by closing the only places where people are able to obtain voter IDs. Or, if they have to close the DMVs, they should immediately repeal vote ID laws.
Dear Governor Bentley,
I understand that your state intends to close the vast majority of its DMVs in order to save money during your current budget crisis. However, Alabama recently passed a law that requires a person to have a voter ID if they want to vote in any election. These IDs can only be obtained at an Alabama DMV.
It’s bad enough that you’re forcing people to spend time and money they may not have in order to obtain a special ID so that they can exercise their essential right to vote just to combat the imaginary problem of voter fraud. Closing down the places people have to go to obtain a voter ID clearly makes voting inaccessible to many people who don’t have the time or the gas money to travel many miles to get one. You’re rapidly strangling the very essence of democracy from your state.
If you must close DMVs to save money, then you also must repeal all voter ID laws. Otherwise, thousands of your citizens will be left without reasonable access to their right to vote. Stop disenfranchising voters in your state.
