Criticize Police Weaponization of Drones in North Dakota

Target: Representative Bill Devlin, Speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives

Goal: Criticize the new law allowing police to weaponize drones and use them against citizens.

A new law in North Dakota allows law enforcement to fly drones armed with everything from Tasers to tear gas. Originally this was not the plan for the bill, but a lobbyist representing the police managed to readjust the bill to include this.

Originally the bill would have required police to obtain a search warrant from a judge in order to use a drone to search for criminal evidence and actually would have banned all weapons on police drones. Supporters of the bill claim it’s not as bad as it seems because it only allows drones to be armed with “less than lethal weapons.”

Yet according to The Guardian, at least 39 people have been killed by police Tasers in 2015 so far. Bean bags, rubber bullets, and flying tear gas canisters have also caused severe injuries and deaths.

The militarization of police has been a major concern across the country as more cases of police brutality and use of excessive force by the police come about. Tell the Speaker of the House you are outraged by this law and hope they take steps to protect people in light of it.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Bill Devlin,

Thanks to a lobbyist, a law originally meant to require that police obtain a search warrant from a judge in order to use a drone to search for criminal evidence, and that would have banned all weapons on police drones, instead now allows police to weaponize drones with everything from tear gas to Tasers.

The militarization of police has been a major concern across the country as more cases of police brutality and use of excessive force by the police come about. I am outraged by this law and hope you and the rest of the House of Representatives take steps to protect people in light of it.

Sincerely,
